On Monday, September 18th, the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Board announced that the application to open a liquor store at 724 State Street in North Camden was withdrawn. WE WON! Thank you to all who got involved! This was a huge win for the community, who came out in staggering numbers to oppose the opening of a liquor store at 724 State Street, in Sam Plaza’s old La Posada restaurant.
Members of the Block Supporter Initiative (BSI) went door-to-door gathering over 500 signatures on a petition that listed more positive, more resourceful uses for the space, like a doctor’s office, restaurant, bakery, or flower shop. Letters of opposition were submitted by stakeholders like Mastery at R.C. Molina School and Christian Ministries, each located within 200 feet of the proposed location, as well as Camden Lutheran Housing, Inc.. In addition, residents, stakeholders, and public officials (including City Councilman Luis Lopez, City Councilman Angel Fuentes, and Candidate for Freeholder Nicole Nance) voiced their opposition to the proposed liquor store at the two public hearings held by the ABC Board in City Council Chambers. Thank you to all who got involved and helped show that North Camden wants and deserves better!
